As a child, just remember how discouraged you became when you were learning something new that you thought you would be good at, but your good efforts were thwarted as you soon realized it was more challenging than you expected it to be.

That’s what it’s like for your child to learn the violin. There is so much more to playing the violin than moving a bow across the strings and making pretty sounds. The violin can be a beautiful instrument. However, it does take time, practice and lots of encouragement and motivation from the parents. It is important, especially in the beginning, for your child to know that Mom and Dad are about as excited about them playing the violin as they are. Their self-confidence will soar sky-high and they will also be less self-conscious about developing their new talent.

One of the best ways for your child to build their confidence is to have proper lessons on violin. Having good instruction from the beginning will ensure that your son or daughter is holding their instrument correctly. Most parents don’t know that their child’s hands can be injured over time just from bowing a violin in the wrong way. Neck and shoulder strain are also a possibility if your child’s violin is not held properly.

To be completely honest, having a good violin instructor sounds fine and dandy, but not everyone can afford private lessons. The next best thing would be for you to get instructional books like String Builders 1 or the Dummies book for violin. There are also online violin lessons that are available that are very effective, especially if your child is a hands-on type of learner.

**Special Note** If you opt for the Dummies book, make sure that your child knows there are a series of Dummies books, and that you are in no way calling them a “Dummy”. My son (whom is a violin beginner) caught me looking at the book online, and said that I was “mean”. On another note, I wish you all the best on your journey as the parent of a concert violinist in the making!

This doesn’t mean you need to get the top of the line model even though a popular phrase is “get the best you can afford”. A good quality beginners violin in the appropriate size, will have a good tone quality and still be very affordable. One thing to keep in mind is durability since children are a little rougher on their instruments than adults. Finding a violin that is durable and stays in tune are also good keys to getting the right instrument for a child.

You can usually find a local music store that provides a package or means to continually upgrade to larger violins as a child grows. These plans address instrument quality as well since better instruments will be needed as the child’s skill level rises.

Notes for a violin can be tough for new violinists to grasp since there are no frets to guide your finger placement. We will go over typical hand placement and some guidelines and methods for understanding right finger technique. You are going to need a tuner (or piano/keyboard), some slim strips of tape or adhesive dots, and a bit of patience. Now, let’s get started on these lessons on violin.

Tuning your violin is the first and most basic step, before anything else, your violin has to be in tune. The strings are tuned to G, D, A, and E with the G string being the lowest pitch (closest to your thumb). If we haven’t been over it before, your left hand should be cradling the neck of the violin between your thumb and the base of the first finger near the palm. This will allow your fingers room and reach to the fingerboard of your violin. Using a tuner or piano, tune one of the strings to match. From this point you can continue using the tuner or piano to tune the remaining strings or you can learn some shortcuts that will come in handy when you don’t have access to a tuner. With one string tuned, you can actually tune all the remaining strings simply by finding the right harmonic between two strings. This takes some practice and skill so lets stay with the tuner for now.

While holding your violin as recommended, your hand is in the first position. There are specific notes that can be played on each string from this position. On the G string for example, you would play a G sharp, an A, and an A sharp (or B flat, they are essentially the same note). The problem every beginner runs into is where exactly to place your fingers since there are no frets as a guide. Violinists use their ear most of the time to ensure they are playing the right note. After some practice, you will have developed a natural memory of proper finger position but in the meantime, there are some learning aides we can use until our fingers learn where to go. You can utilize adhesive tape strips or dots to mark the appropriate placement for your fingers under each string. You can use standard colored tape or buy special kits made just for the violin. Just make sure the adhesive is not too strong and can be removed easily. The last thing you want is to ruin your fingerboard with adhesive residue.

One of the coolest things you can get into is playing an instrument. I don’t know what it is, but somehow some instruments just seems to “move” us in ways we can’t describe sometimes. For me, violins, pianos and guitars have always moved me in that sort of way. A few months ago I decided to learn guitar, I only wish it was easier for me to learn and be instructed on different things like how to hold the guitar, how to strum the strings, etc. If your looking into playing an instrument such as a violin and also wish there was a way to be shown how to do certain things like holding it correctly, reading the notes on sheet music and tabs, or anything else, you’re in luck! There are many different sites online that offer something called video lesson packages.

These packages allow you to easily learn to play the violin online through watching an instructor and “mimicking” he or she. These packages usually include other things besides hundreds of videos, such as jam tracks, exercises, scales and cards, and step by step instructions. This could be incredibly beneficial to you the user.

This must cost a lot right? Not really. In fact, most systems I’ve seen online cost a mere 0 and in some other cases they cost under 0 which to me is just incredible! You get a ton of videos, all kinds of steps on learning all about the violin and a world renowned violinist for way less than it would cost to have someone actually come to your house and instruct you. Another nice thing about e-instructors is the fact that you can start and stop the program whenever you want, as well as do the program whenever you want. If you want to do it at 1200pm or at 200am, you can! That’s the beauty of it, you have full control over how fast, how slow, when you do, when you don’t, etc.
